Draining the radiators and header tank should have had no effect on the hot water supply at all, since it is fed from the cold water storage tank. I suspect you have closed too many valves and not opened them all again.!!??

Having had a similar problem i hope i can give you a steer. When i decided to replace some old rads with new i turned off the cold water feed from the central heating header tank in my loft. This stops the water draining out of the header tank when you drain down the system, this of course means that the cold water feed does not try and fill a header tank that will be constantly draining water due to you draining down the system to do this i simply shut off the gate wheel valve on the 15mm pipe at the base of the header tank. To cover myself as a boots and braces thing i also shut off the Hot water gate wheel valve on the hot water storage tank. Having drained down and removed the old radiators i then fitted the new ones making sure to leave the air bleed valve open on them all. Then i opened the gate valves and tested the system. After about 2 Min's there was a loud noise in the system and the boiler quickly turned itself off. Lots of head scratching later the problem could only be one or two things 1. there was air in the system, 2. there was a blockage in the water flow. When i checked the out let from the header tank i found that the valve had seized in the shut position even though the wheel moved fully in both directions. I simply had to change the old gate wheel valve to rectify the problem, therefore DIY £5.00 get a plumber in who knows how much. Hope this helps.

Depends on your system, but sometimes i get an airlock problem that i cannot get rid of. So i drain the system and refill it by putting a hose on the drain off and the other if you got on an outside tap. The idea is to fill it with mains pressure water.
Now this will work best if there are two of you, one to operate the tap and the other to watch the tank in the loft. When you get water into the tank then shout down to turn the tap off.

You have an airlock in the cold feed to the cylinder or in the hot service pipe coming from the cylinder to the taps/outlets

If the cylinder seems empty the cold feed is airlocked. For the cold feed you need to place a bucket or hose onto the drain offcock on the cold feed pipe at the bottom of the cylinder and undo the draincock and draw the water through.

For the service pipe you can also put the flat palm of your hand over the bath mixer tap if you have one and press hard enough to seal it. having made sure that all other taps are shut off Turn both hot and cold on together allowing the cold water to run back up th hot pipe and clear the airlock. Alternatively put a hose onto the hot and cold taps and turn them both on. After a minute or two you can take your hand or hose off and water should come from both taps. It will splutter form the hot at first let it run until it stops splutttering (this is the air). if it still fails repeat the proceedure until leaving the hose or hand on a little longer

You should have a gate valve going into your hot water tank try to open it a bit more.
Did you put any fenox into the system?

Hi,
I think your ball tap may have stuck in the water tank, usually found in the loft, there are two tanks, look inside and if the ball tap is stuck, lift it, to let the water fill the tank, sometimes they corrode, I hope that helps.

you have prob shut off/diverted a valve either local to the radiator or the cylinder.. or worse, if the valves are more that 15 yrs old and rarely moved, one could be stuck closed.. (this usualy happens with the older wheel types.)
