It's a saint day just like any other. St Valentine. He was just some dude who was put to death, but he loved someone a lot at the time. find the whole story here: http://www.pictureframes.co.uk/pages/saint_valentine.htm

anyway, i think that it has turned into another way to make money. but what hasn't??

I think it's a pretty nice way to make money! I'm one of those people who enjoys any excuse to buy presents and have a party though!

The modern day valentine's day started just over a hundered years ago when the first cards were printed (1880's comes to mind). In the last century Hallmark made it the holiday it is today, with the sods that are willing to bite into it.
So yes, a moneymaking scam, but as long as prople know what is going on, and spend because they want to, it isn't as bad as it could be.

Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

I was told ages ago that a vicar from maybe Verona who was to be put to death some how because of his love for some woman wrote a letter and signed it "From your Valentine" and ever since this has become a tradition. But I think it's just another reason for single guys to get the day off work and go to the pub and get pissed.

well, depends on how you personally see it. If you see it as a must to spend money on stupid presents then it is indeed so. After all, often things are what we choose to take them for. I personally live in the country where people are not too tired of St Valentine since it came to us only a couple of years ago (has managed to become as commersialized as in the western world though). Teenagers are excited, elder generation sceptical. I see it as a perfect opportunity for an evening with candles and a glass of champagne in private with the person I love. Not that we do not have it the rest of 365 days and still - another reminder to be romantic.
