Since I don't think Giuliani will make it past the neocons of the GOP establishment, McCain would have to be the man in question. If his idea for the "surge" works, if somehow Iraq becomes stabilized due to his originality, he will get much credit and will receive a major boost in the polls. He's even with the Dems already--or at worst a point behind Clinton. Another attack would work against Bush and the Repubs because of their boastful words that America is better protected now than before. It would backfire on them. Bush made Homeland Security cuts to the budget for NYC and DC (can you believe it?) Plus this week it was reported that $5 billion that was meant for Iraq is missing and unaccounted for!!! Where is it? If Israel attacks Iran, it won't shift the balance because Dems are very pro-Israel. Israel wouldn't attack without just cause--like maybe a few days before they know a launch will be against their country from Iran. If the GOP defends Bush in the campaign, they are sunk. If they don't defend his policies, you'll have a split in the party ranks. Dems will win a close one.

Any number of things could give Republicans the edge in the next national election cycle. A weak showing by the Democratically-controlled Congress is probably the most likely; and I don't meaning Congress failing to get bills passed, but failing to get policy-making bills to the President at all.
Another likely path is for center-right candidates to get to generals in contested districts - a difficult proposition as the close general election races have had Republican candidates from both the strong and far right. While it plays to the ticket-voting base, the growing swing/issues voting bloc tends to get turned off by a candidate swinging too far in either direction (which is why most of the winning Democrats in close generals last cycle were centerists and issues candidates, not liberal idealogues).
As for the President, they may not have to do much, other than to keep from self-destructing as a party in the primaries. This was another problem for the Republican congressional candidates: they failed to reconcile their voting bloc to the candidate after contentious primaries. The result? A large number of Republicans stayed home on election day -- the conservatives in some races, the moderates in others, depending on the primary winners -- because they were disgusted with the entire process and were unwilling to support their party's candidate.
As for the world stage, I believe that blame for almost any escalation in Iran would be layed squarely on the administration's policies and diplomatic efforts. Gods forbid that another attack on US soil occurs, but realistically, it will be blamed on whoever did something last: Republicans will spin it as a result of Democrats being weak on terrorism, Democrats will spin it as a result of the administration's Middle Eastern policies. Whichever side made the last push will bear the brunt of public outrage.

In the normal world, a miracle, however, America is far from Normal, and the common sense that seems to be dumbfounded by their previous victories will no doubt be surprised again by the gullibility and low intelligence of many of the American voting electorate.

I don't wish to sound FLIPPANT, on this point, - it IS, - after ALL, - a SERIOUS matter, - but, the TRUTH is this!Judging, by what's been in the news, recently, - things have gone HORRIBLY WRONG! For THAT reason, alone, I'd say, the Republicans would be in DIRE need of a better "COMEBACK", than LAZARUS!

A lot of prayers. Iran and Israeli would throw a interesting twist in the mix, also Korea and Syria. This is the biggest mess the US has ever been in. We should have answered as we did Pearl Harbor.

That's so ludicrous..when did the democratic party even make a solid plan to aide the Iraq situation, not once! They are all doing the "if I only knew" routine, its old and it stinks, politicians dodging their blame and responsibility to question first, then vote wisely after debating the issue at hand. Then ignorantly serving it as an excuse, to their supporters during their campaigning. That's so lame, pathetic, and old school politics.
But, I guess if people are that gullible, to believe that anyone in congress couldn't question the Presidents request for going to war, is not very bright themselves.
Politics at its best does permeates the stench of old trash, vote republican, dodge the democrats!!!
