American football is a lot similar to the game of rugby. Of course we here in the States don't know a whole lot about rugby; except for people who play the sport recreationally.
The one person who explained the various ways that points are scored and the basic fundamentals of the game did a very nice job.
Essentially in American football; the game is played in four quarters of varying length. In the NFL and college, the quarters are 15 minutes in length. In high school, the quarters are typically 12 minutes in length. There is a halftime at the end of the second quarter when both teams leave the field for a rest period. That lasts usually 17 to 20 minutes or so.
In pro football in the National Football League if the teams are tied at the end of the 4th quarter; there is an overtime period. Whichever team scores first in the overtime wins. If neither team scores in overtime then the game ends as a tie.
Football is a very physically and mentally demanding sport. Players really need to be conditioned well. Injuries during games unfortunately are quite common. Everything from a minor sprain to a career-ending injury. Though it's gotten better over the years with the better conditioning of the players, etc.

Team "A" kicks off to Team "B" to start the game.
Team "B" has 4 tries - called "downs" - to advance the ball 10 yards (from where they advanced the ball on the kickoff) in order to get another 4 downs.
They can use a combination of running play sets, or passing play sets. A play is over when the player in possession of the ball has been tackled by the other team.
If a team fails to get the 10 yards that are necessary for another set of downs the ball is given to Team "A" where the ball was last held by Team "B". But, what most teams do most of the time is make a decision before they exercise 4th down. If they are within 40 yards or so, they may attempt a Field Goal (=3 points). This is done when the ball is "hiked" to a Placeholder who is kneeling on one knee, while the Kicker boots the ball toward the Goalposts.
If they are very near the Goal Line, they may go for a Touchdown (=6 points). When a team scores a Touchdown, they have two choices. They may attempt an Extra Point (=1 point) by kicking a ball through the uprights (just like they do for a 3 point Field Goal), or attempt to pass or run the ball past the Goal Line for 2 point play.
Another option on 4th Down is to Punt the ball to the other team. This is where the ball is "hiked" to the Punter and he holds it chest high, drops the ball, and kicks it before it hits the ground.
After a team has scored it's points, they kick the ball to the other team just like the start of the game.

To much info. The best way to learn is buying a book and watching the games. Once you have a good understanding, you'll get hooked.
