Does It have Drum, or Disk Brakes?
If it has rear Drum brakes they will automaticly adjust to compensate for pad wear. (as was stated by someone else)
If they are squealing every time though, you might have rusted or worn out parts. Its a common occurance for the starwheel, (the automatic adjuster) to become seized and cause this noise. Your supposed to lube it when you install/reinstall it but allot of shops don't do it for the sake of hassel/time/stupidity!
When was the last time that you had the shoes replaced?
rear shoes usually last at least twice as long as front pads because the front pads do usually around 80% of the total braking.
If its been a while since youve had them replaced, it could be the rivets being ground into the drum itself. (not all shoes have rivets it could be metal to metal grinding as well)

I personaly don't think it would be the shoes because it would more than likely the noise whenever you brake, not just in reverse. So hopefully its just some little parts that need some lubrication. Or they just need to be re adjusted. Without looking though, I can't tell you if you need new shoes.

PS< remember that at the shop they will probably try to sell you new pads/shoes anyway even though you might not need them now. Its not supposed to happen but it does all the time.>

Possibly nothing, as brakes automatically adjust when the vehicle is moving in reverse. But it would be a good idea to get them checked; if your shoes are worn out, you need to replace them before the drums or discs are damaged.

Depending on the model of car, its more than likely your pads are down to the minimum wear indicators or if you have handbrake shoes they are binding..where ever the sound is coming from front or rear I would start by looking at those pads first..

If the problem is only happening while in reverse it may not be the breaks and infact be the disks. Which made need replacing or just machining

examine your ATF fluid aspect. opposite calls for the optimal line stress of each and each and every of the gears to interact. in the adventure that your fluid aspect is low or your pump is failing or maybe more beneficial undemanding the 4L60 and 4L80 have a common issue touching on to the line stress regulator that ought to quite be fastened through dropping the trans pan. anyhow, again on topic in the adventure that your stress is low opposite is the first to bypass.

Sounds to me like rear drums worn to metal. Pull your drums and take a look.
