No, most cars now are designed to drive on overdrive, that is shifting to a higher gear then the car needs to perfom its function. For example, I am driving and I come to a downhill near the stopsign near my house. My car is in whatever gear it is but the rpms are under a thousand. It saves gas that way, that it how newer cars are designed.

No, you use less gas - but put more strain on the engine. This is fine at expressway speeds, but when driving up steep hills, or carrying/towing a load, switch it off. The constant upshifting and downshifting (as it tries to use overdrive, then finds it can't maintain speed, then tries again, etc.) will kill the transmission. The lower gear will also make it easier to stop if you are carrying/towing a load.

Actually, you use less gas with overdrive on, because the engine is turning more slowly so the engine runs more efficiently and its friction losses are less. Leave the overdrive on unless you are off road or climbing extremely steep grades.

do you have any idea what overdrive is? it's to improve your fuel mileage and it also is less wear on the engine so you will want to use it all the time its design to be a no brainer that's why they have it start off automatically so you don't have to be concerned with it.
