Different kinds need different treatment.
Dandelions start early spring. Catch them before they start to take root. Then about 2 weeks about the start of spring is a good time to stop dandelions.

To stop crabgrass, which usually occurs after a long hot spell. You should act lot earlier. But the time to spray is before the indigos start to bloom. The start of indigo says the summer in full swing. If you spray after that, you are wasting your money.

Usually for broadleaf variety, using 2,4-d mecoprop takes care of most. For crabgrass, there is a special one that you need to get.

For grubs, you should control them by mid-july, early august and continue spraying till 3 rd week in August.

To keep your lawn green and healthy, of course aeration and sprinkiling of water for about 30 minutes before sun comes up is a good way to go.

Just as they are coming up or Spring, you need to get them in a growing phase so the spray is taken into the whole plant, use a good systemic weed killer, glycophosphate based works well such as roundup. But if you've got some really tough ones something like bush clear is better. Check the label chances are it will tell you what the killer can be used for
