A long time ago (obviously before you were born) you actually COULD take miles off a car by rolling the car backwards. Even Ferris said that if that didn't work they could turn back the odometer by hand (but is harder because it requires getting inside the car). Now obviously at that point in time it was no longer possible to roll back the mileage the way they attempted.
However I think you are making too much out of this. Sure one could argue that the point was to show how teens believe everything or an ironic commentary on urban legends that last. It was something that teens had to deal with during that time period- something that their parents could have done but they could not have done. But most likely it was left in the movie because it allowed for the climax to occur.

I think that Ferris didn't know that miles wouldn't come off. As a high schooler when that movie came out, I wouldn't have known that either. I don't think it had anything to do with the 80s being gullable either, the 80s were a great time to be a kid, we didn't have to worry about all the things teenagers worry about now. Also Ferris was good at technology not automotives.

OK - STATING THE FACTS......
YES, back before the 1950's, you could drive a car backwards and take off the mileage. After that, a person would have to unhook the speedometer and manually turn the mileage back to lower it. Then as we get closer to the present, the mileage could be turned back by hooking the speedometer up to a reversible drill, and running it backwards. I do not know if the last way was ever blocked, but to my knowledge those are the ways a speedometer's mileage used to be lowered....

There were some models of dodge and plymouth that actually would take the miles off if ran backwards. But that stopped in the 50's

ferris bueller doesnt know everything, he just has loyal but gullible cameron to make him look good. always needs some goofy nobody to have people compare and look good to.
in the last few decades, reversing has no bearing on the reading.

Ferris knew. He just had to tell Cameron something to let him take the car.
