This is the deal. My little brother (who is now 17) has been home schooled ALL his life. Not only was his home schooleing LOUSY, he hasnt been doing his school for the last....1 and a half to 2 years. Whos fault is this? MY MOTHERS! It is her position to educate him and if she CANT, she has to send him to public school. What grade are you supposed to be in at age 17? Junior OR Senior right? Guess what grade he would HAVE to start out in if he were to go to public school now? He would have to start out in 8th GRADE! This is absolutley rediculous, and I would place her educational neglect on him up with CHILD ABUSE. So, heres my question, is there any agency that I can call in to have her locked up and or have her punished somehow? This is uncalled for, hes not a dog that you can just train whenever you FEEL like it. He doesnt know anything, a 17 year old should be OUT of algebra 2 and he doesnt even know the very basics of algebra.

So I say once more, who do I call to come evaluate this obvious case of neglect? I want her to suffer legal consequences because this is outrageous!

I dont want to here this "why are you mad at your mom" or "why do you hate your mom". Its not that I hate her its that I am outraged that she has treated his education like a used diaper. Its absolutely outrageous and I am ENRAGED by it.

I would call the State Education Department. Even though home schooled, plans and work need to be reviewed every year. This is not a free pass for parents NOT to educate their children! That is required by law, as is an inspection by the school department which failed miserably.

Your mother meets the criteria for Child Educational Neglect.

Sad your brother is where he is!.

Maybe your brother can be tutored by a certified teacher without going in to the 8th grade? I don't know what the laws are in your state. My neighbor's kid is also 17. He doesn't attend school either. His mother claims he's being "home schooled", but she has mental problems. I have only seen this kid outside two times in 9 months. He's going to have some social problems, relating to people his own age. It's OK in my state to be home schooled. There is little control as far as structure. The best thing to do is to find a tutor or a teacher that would help him. If I lived near you, I'd volunteer to help. I have previous experience as a tutor. One of my "students" graduated from a college in NY state. When she started she couldn't even write an essay. Feel free to email me and tell me where you live (if you want) & I'll see if I can do research for you. I also have a friend who is a certified teacher and tutors students at night.

Well first of all... I'm 37 and I don't know the basics of Algebra.

But I'd think if you want to find out what the laws are in your state... you should start with the Dept of Education. You could try CPS but they'd most likely laugh at you.

UNLESS there is a special needs issue somewhere... then it's a whole nutha subject!

Is there a chance that as his brother, you might always look at him as if he's a dumb-as-? Sounds to me like you have deeper issues with your mom than if she's teaching him the proper high school curriculum. But that's just my opinion.

(and btw... most 17 yr old these days don't know a damn thing anyway.) - no offense to the 17 year olds who DO know a damn thing ;)

You can call Child Services since technically this is a form of neglect. They'll get in touch with the proper people about having your brother finish his schooling.

Report is to Social Services or to your state's home school outreach office. Try the phone book. An education is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child.

I would start with the state board of education. They should be able to refer you to whatever it is that regulates home schooling in your state.

Not too sure you can have her put in jail or if you really want that, but call child welfare or the local school system, they can deal with it from there.
Then you can get help to deal with your hatred of youe mother separately.
