I was looking to just buy a cell phone without the contract and came across all of these "unlocked" phones for 3 times the price what gives?

If you're going to buy a newer unlocked or locked phone on Ebay you should expect the price to be higher because it isn't coming with a cellphone plan. Buying your phone with a plan will decrease the phones price because you're paying for other things like activation and service with the provider.
Keep looking on Ebay or Amazon to find a good deal. But if you go to an actual cellphone store expect to pay full retail price for the phone if you're not signing up for a plan. You can also check out cellphoneshop.net sometimes they have cheap returned or refurbished cellphones without plans.

generally, the phone was originally meant to use a specific server, such as t-mobile
however, this phone has been "unlocked" so that you can have the specific phone you want, regardless of what service you use
personally, i would stick to the company that i'm with, in case i have problems, i can call my service provider. also, three times the price? i'm not stupid
unfortunately, i'm sure a certain percentage of these have also been stolen [from stores, usually] - which leaves lazy sellers that don't look up info on the phone sell the phone for prices that are not current with other sellers

lets say you buy a cell phone from sprint and you have service with them and you tun off the service later and still have the phone later you want to try to turn on the phone with cingular you cant because that phone is linked with the sprint company like the new cholate phone from virizon they only carry it cause its there phone so if you get a phone unlocked then you can get it with any service provider you want.
