A circle with points on the 12,3,6,and 9.
These are the four cardinal directions. North, East, South, and West.
The points in the half marks between these four make the other four points and they aer, north-east, south-east, south-west, and north-west.
Eight point compasses are not as acurate as 16 point ones because all the pieces get cut in half again to make north north east and south north east and so on.

sorta feel i shouldn't bother.. but.. why not?
a compus that points N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW
if you wanna really get into it - 8 point stars go back to somethin or other of babylonian origin. think the 6 pointed goes back to amun-ra (aka horus) of egypt -- used in both the ~rolls eyes~ 'star of david', and the masonic logo. bible in OT & NT talks about the star of egypt that they shouldn't be worshipping.

The contemporary compass rose appears as two rings, one smaller and set inside the other. The outside ring denotes true cardinal directions while the smaller inside ring denotes magnetic cardinal directions. True north refers to the geographical location of the north pole while magnetic north refers to the direction towards which the south pole of a magnetic object (as found in a compass) will point. The angular difference between true and magnetic north is called variation, which varies depending on location. The angular difference between magnetic heading and compass heading is called deviation which varies by vessel and its heading.
