Men want it because they are horny. Biologically/evolutionarily, males have a better chance to propagate their genes if the spread as much sperm a round as possible. So from a scientific standpoint it's natural that males have a desire to have sex with as many females as possible. Which still comes down to being horny.

For women the biological advantage comes from being choosy about who they have offspring with, since a single offspring represents a much larger commitment of time and resources than for a male. So it's just different evolutionary strategies.

From what I've seen, for a women to want to have sex with a lot of different partners, it usual comes down to two reasons, often both:

1) She is insecure and looking for some kind of outside confirmation of their own value. She is trying proving to herself that she is desirable and/or powerful.

I'm not making a judgment or even a stereotype here, maybe there are some women who just like sex with a lot of different partners. But almost every woman I have known, and some of them have been good friends, that sleeps with a lot of guys has been horribly insecure.

2) The other reason I have seen women do this for is to avoid intimacy. Everybody has a sex drive, but for a lot of women, especially in this culture, sex tends to be much more an emotional issue than it is for men. So to satisfy their sexual needs, which are normal, and simultaneously avoid getting attached to somebody, they'll deliberately have short sexual relationships with people who they know ahead of time that they won't really care about. (Often with the aid of copious amounts of alcohol and/or other controlled substances, I might add.)

Of course, I don't really know what you mean by "so many." Some people have hundreds of sexual partners throughout their life, others only a few or even just one, or none (shudder.) I'd estimate that the average is somewhere in the low teens. If you ask people outright how many they’ve had, men will tend to lie on the high side and women will tend to lie on the low side (this has even been proven in statistical studies.)

In our society, it's becoming pretty normal and accepted for both men and women to want to experiment with different partners before choosing a long-term mate (except some crazies who will tell anyone they can that God wants you to save yourself for marriage or you'll go to hell. Like God has nothing better to worry about than your sex life. Yeah, um, that would make God kind of a perv, which I sort of doubt. If you think different then go play with the other crazies where you can't do much damage, and stay away from normal people.) So anyway... most people have a number of different partners when they are younger, until they meet somebody that they want to settle down with.

That's animal culture. Being equipped with higher intelligence the humans should understand their position and stay away from illicit involvements. One should only have sexual relations only in a marriage. Marriage is a religious concept which gives a kind of provision for the sex life. But in religious terms the sex in marriage is also as per some rules and regulations it's not like animals.
Even if few religions allow multiple wives still there are strict rules and regulations in a true marriage relationship.

And even if see practically, illicit affairs always lead to some blunders only --- better stay away and educate others as well for the same.

Men by nature is a monogamous creature. His natural urge is such that he want to have as many sex partners as he can. One man, one wife is a law imposed by society, not by nature. In fact, in the past, men are allowed to have several wives. Some religions today still allow for more than one wife.

Some men, and some women, have a higher urge for sex and therefore cannot satisfy themselves with just one partner.

Possibly the same reason why some men want sex with so many different partners.

Higher testosterone level than normal? The need to fulfill their sexual desires? It doesn't matter who with, as long as they get it.

on behalf of men...its a cultural thing. Its beat into them from early on that all they really want in life is sex and lots of it. Most guys don't don't get the satisfaction they think they will get after doing it, so they keep at it thinking they eventually will, they think its all they really want in life and that it will make them happy and it never does. Its like a marshmallow....good at thetime, but there is nothing in it worth eating.
