The reason I ask is because I had a shoebox full of quarters stolen by a moving company. I am trying to figure out how much it was to make a claim.

American quarter is about the same size as Candian quarter.
Dimensions are 0.95 inch dia x 0.075 inch thick.
Shoebox is approximately 13.0 x 9.0 x 5.0 inches.

Volume of box = L*W*H = 585 cubic inches.
Volume of quarter = Pi*r*r*h = 0.053 cubic inches.

Therefore number of quarters is approximately 11000.
This would equal $2750, since there's 4 quarters to the dollar.

Only way to figure that is to measure how much space a $10 roll of quarters takes up and how many by measurement would fit into a shoe box. Get a roll, measure and then figure out how many would fit. Probably more than you think.

Figure it out from the total weight minus the box weight . If you do it by volume, you have to figure out the the unfilled space. Were the coins rolled up? How were the rolls stacked? Were the individual coins loose? Were they bent?
It could be approximated, but it would be easier doing it by weight. You would know the total mass and then divide by the individual coin weight to come up with how many quarters.
