well, the answers are great! But, why have people remained so intolerant of each other, throughout history thare is evidence of intolerance and hatred!! But by now after centuries and decades of learning and progressing, you would have thought that this intolerance would have changed by now - so my question really is WHY HAS IT NOT CHANGED? why does humankind continue to be so stupid, intolerant, filled with hatred and inconsiderate of others, the planet, religions, skin colour and etc etc??? WHY?

Ignorant fear.

Humans are naturally cautious of strangers because in distant history, strangers were generally a threat. Even though this is less true now, ignorance, poor education and lack of experience of other cultures still means this intolerance is sadly prevalent.

because their lack of tolerance has been placed with ignorance and hatred towards other people's race, sexuality, religion, etc and which is why there are so many bigots spouting so much crap. instead of accepting people for who, as well as what they are, they prefer to rant and rave and be ignorant all at the same time. people are who and what they are, it is never their fault that they are the race that they are, the gender that they are, that they choose to live a particular lifestyle; likewise, gay and lesbian people because they have their reasons for doing so. yes the world and society isn't perfect and yes, there will always be people who hate others because of the way they talk, look, of what they do. but there are also those who are compassionate, civilised, tolerant, respectful and of whom treats others as they'd like to be treated. and it's those people we should pay particular attention to, as well as praise, rather than for us to waste our time with the racists, homophobes, sexists etc. why bother with them, as they are clearly not worth it

Ignorance and fear.People who have a positive belief of who they are and where they believe they are going can seem intimidating to those who don't.Also those of a diiferent race, colour or faith scare bigots who believe only their race ,colour or faith can be right or best.

insecurity (real or perceived), herd instinct (peer pressure to conform to local norms), ignorance of the other
all the above and more lead to fear, fear of "them" taking "our" jobs, fear of changes to lifestyle, fear of cultural change
