You can break it down into √( 6 x 7) = √6 x √7.

It can also be written as √(2 x 21) = √2 x √21 and √(3 x 14) = √3 x √14.

Still a fourth way breaks it down into three factors.

√42 = √(2 x 3 x 7) = √2 x √3 x √7

√42 already IS a surd. (A SURD is a number with a " √ " sign in it.) But if you mean break it down into a product of the surds of prime numbers, since 42 = 2 x 3 x 7, one gets :

√42 =√2 x √3 x √7.
