I am 14 if that helps. I wasn't even trying to boast before all the 'average' answers.

Hi,
An average IQ should be 100, the score is just a number to reflect where a person scores in relation to everyone else. Many tests are structured so that they have a mean of 100 and increments/decrements of 15 points for each standard deviation above or below the mean. Your score is approximately one standard deviation above the norm meaning you scored better than about 84% of the population. I don't know which test you were assessed with or how current that test's standardisation sample is. There is a phenomena, called the Flynn Effect whereby individuals score higher on tests that were normed in the past thereby yielding spuriously high scores.

Assuming that your IQ score of 116 was obtained using a "current" instrument and remembering that IQ scores are estimates then you do not need to be discouraged. I think someone earlier made a point about motivation, effort, being organised and focussed. These qualities are as important as intellectual ability. A pleasant dosposition and honesty are perhaps more important.

Hope you do well, don't stress (or gloat) over your IQ.

Best Wishes

Depends a bit on how it was measured, but generally the average range is considered to be 90 to 110. The average college graduate has an IQ of about 125, though that number has trended upward very slightly over time.

A single test result should not be taken as definitive. Results can vary by many points from one test result to another, with the tests taken years apart.

If the 116 is from the Stanford-Binet test, and the test taker has not yet graduated from high school, the test taker is probably slightly above average in intelligence.

The IQ score is not the only measure- there are many kinds of intelligence- Motivation is very important as is persistence- it has been said genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration!!

SO READ THIS ARTICLE BELOW JUDICIOUSLY
What is a good IQ score? What is a high IQ score? What is a low IQ score? These are common questions, particularly after someone finds out their score from an IQ test.

Lewis Terman (1916) developed the original notion of IQ and proposed this scale for classifying IQ scores:

Over 140 - Genius or near genius

120 - 140 - Very superior intelligence

110 - 119 - Superior intelligence

90 - 109 - Normal or average intelligence

80 - 89 - Dullness

70 - 79 - Borderline deficiency

Under 70 - Definite feeble-mindedness

Normal Distribution & IQ Scores
The properties of the normal distribution apply to IQ scores:

50% of IQ scores fall between 90 and 110

70% of IQ scores fall between 85 and 115

95% of IQ scores fall between 70 and 130

99.5% of IQ scores fall between 60 and 140

Low IQ & Mental Retardation
5% of people have an IQ under 70 and this is generally considered as the benchmark for "mental retardation", a condition of limited mental ability in that it produces difficulty in adapting to the demands of life.

Severity of mental retardation can be broken into 4 levels:

50-70 - Mild mental retardation (85%)

35-50 - Moderate mental retardation (10%)

20-35 - Severe mental retardation (4%)

IQ < 20 - Profound mental retardation (1%)

High IQ & Genius IQ
Genius IQ is generally considered to begin around 140 to 145, representing ~.25% of the population (1 in 400). Here's a rough guide:

115-124 - Above average (e.g., university students)
125-134 - Gifted (e.g., post-graduate students)
135-144 - Highly gifted (e.g., intellectuals)
145-154 - Genius (e.g., professors)
155-164 - Genius (e.g., Nobel Prize winners)
165-179 - High genius
180-200 - Highest genius
>200 - "Unmeasurable genius"
More notes on High IQ and Genius IQ:

Einstein was considered to "only" have an IQ of about 160.

Mensa is a society for people with high IQ, in the top 2% (1 in 50).

In 1926, psychologist Catherine Morris Cox published a study "of the most eminent men and women" who had lived between 1450 and 1850 to estimate what their IQs might have been.

IQ is a flawed measure of intelligence.. it is an indicator but can be improved with practice .. which proves that it cannot be a genuine measure of true, "raw intellingence".

116 is a little above average, but I have worked with people who cover a huge range of IQs and the most important aspect is "how you use it".

Your IQ is not something which should concern you, but you should concentrate on your strengths and try to use your intelligence to push you forward in a field of endeavour for which you have already shown an aptitude.

Unfortunately, it's not the IQ number that is important, it's what you do with it. There are some very intelligent people with high IQs who don't do well in life because they have no drive and have large egos. On the other hand, there are a lot of people of average IQ who succeed because they study and work hard regardless of that meaningless IQ number. Besides, how many universities, if any, ask you for your IQ number on their applications? None, because they know that your IQ has no correlation to how well you will do in in your studies. So, instead of focusing on discussing your IQ, study and work hard and your success will be guaranteed. Good luck in your future

It's a little above "average" - not extremely high, but not low by any means. Depending on your age, you may continue to gain IQ points over time. My first IQ test was at age 7, at which point I scored 121; I'm now 52, and my IQ measures around 140-150, as it has since I was 18 or so.

There are many IQ intelligences. Do not base one test on the complete person. It is difficult to judge whether your 116 is high or low. Average on a regular IQ test is 100.

Average adult brain achieves an IQ of 100, however is average what you are after?? Mensa requires 145, and a college graduate average scores 113, so you will have to determine your own interpretaton of "good".

FYI, at last test I scored IQ of 136,, but I am not a college graduate, and am terrible at general knowledge. Go figure.
