A watershed includes all the land area which drains off into a specific body of water. Watersheds are important because activities in the watershed affect the composition and health of the body of water. Examples:

1. Fertilizers and pesticides applied to land in the watershed can end up in the lake or river.
2. Digging or plowing land in the watershed can cause the river or lake to have more silt deposited and more turbidity or cloudiness in the water.
3. Accidental spills in the watershed can end up in the lake or river -- truck or train accidents, sewage treatment facility flooding, ...
4. Applying salts to icy roads or tarring/resurfacing roads ...
