It really depends on what kind of travelling you mean. A passport is now required no matter what country you go to.
It's always good to find a few thigns out about the country you are going to. Is it a third world country? If so, make sure you bring proper items to keep yourself healthy and safe.
Someplace like Canada or Europe? You don't need to be so careful with water there as in other countries.
Make sure you buy a map of at least the area you know you will be in. If you plan on staying in a certain city, but also moving around a bit, buy the city map AND a country/ region map.
Know the currency exchange rate.
Make sure that when you do exchange currencies, get some small change for taxi/ food. Ask how much each coin/ bill is worth.
If travelling solo, try to figure our how to say a few basic things like "Hello" and "Where is the bathroom" in the native language.
If this is a business trip, make sure you still know some native language, it's only good for you.
Plan on moving around a lot? Get a hiker's backpack with a frame. It's a good way to move around easily.
If you need to have a lot of money with you, credit card/ atm (many countries have atm's for bank of america/ pnc/ citibank) is a much beter idea than carrying your bills around.
Keep all your documentation (passport, plane tickets if you are flying or any other tickets, and other important papers) sealed up and stored safely. Although those bag's you put under your belt are uncomfortable, they are effective. These are definitely necessary in less controlled areas (West/ South Africa, Southeast Asia, Northwest S. America, etc.)
Package your shampoo/ toiletries in a sealed package as well. You don't need a bottle to pop open and have shampoo over all your things.
Check for hotels/ hostels in the areas you are going if you don't have other accomadation. Hostels are cheap, but often lack privacy. Hotels are expensive, but are much more relaxing and safe.
Use common sense. If you need to hitchhike somewhere, it's ok. However, people can pick out tourists easily, and some may be waiting to take advantage. If someone offers you a ride in a day or two, and says firendly, "Hey, why not jsut throw your bags in the trunk and not carry them?" don't listen! (Someone tried to pull this off on me. After I told the driver that I preffered to keep my things with me, alas! he never showed up the next day.)
Know the location and number to the American Embassy. Those guys are willing to help out (same goes for any other embassy, but they aren't much help if you aren't from their country)
Most importantly, enjoy yourself! Travelling is awesome!

First you get a passport. With this you can travel outside the US.
Then you need to research if the country requires a Visa. That is a permit to visit there from the government.
With a last name like yours, I would not put the Middle East as a destination.

First you should find out where you would like to go, quite a bit in advance. Then, apply for a passport. You should look into group tours, you will see a lot and everything will be taken care of for you like hotel, food, sightseeing.
Have fun traveling! I have been to many places and it never gets old! I love love love it! Never been anywhere I didn't like.

Get a passport and buy a plane ticket. Then get on the plane and go to another country. It's pretty easy.
