Your computer can run continuously for as long as you will let it. This is probably my 11th computer system (I've had many different makes and models) and I never turn mine off except in the case of a freeze up. It runs 24/7 and I have never had a problem. It is actually recommended by many computer operators to leave it running. Beside, you don't have to deal with the constant booting up and shutting down. You should clean out the fan now and then to prevent dust build up. In idle mode, your computer should be using minimal resources (that of an alarm clock that is left on all the time).

Neither will harm the computer. Idle mode uses more electricity than shutting it off (the computer STILL uses electricity when turned off.)

Personally, I use hibernate mode. This goes one step beyond standby mode. In standby mode, select components are still turned on. The ram is still powered and still contains whatever you were running.

Hibernate saves this data to the harddrive and then shuts off the computer. Why do I do this? The power at my house is slightly less than stable during the day (when I'm not home). If you unplug a computer that is in standby mode, you will be stuck rebooting when you go to turn it back on. Hibernate doesn't have this problem.

One thing to consider is startup and shutdown times: (startup/shutdown time in seconds)
Leaving the computer on: 0/0
Standby mode: 4/2
Hibernate mode: 27/15
Turning on/off per use: 151/45 (not to mention, you still have to reopen all your software).
