The Pythagoran Thereom is: a^2 + b^2 = c^2

You have three values:
a = ___
b = 7
c = 9

First: replace the given values with the corresponding variables in the equation....

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

a^2 + 7^2 = 9^2

a^2 + 7*7 = 9*9

a^2 + 49 = 81

Sec: combine "like" terms --- subtract 49 from both sides (when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign)....

a^2 + 49 - 49 = 81 - 49

a^2 = 81 - 49

a^2 = 32

Third: eliminate the exponent - find the square root of both sides....

V`a^2 = V`32

V`a*a = V`32

a = V`32

*Express 32 in lowest terms....

a = V`4*8

a = V`4*4*2

a = V`2*2*2*2*2

*The square root means - when you have a pair of the same number or, a number is repeated twice > you write the number in front of the radical sign, once.

a = 2(2)V`2

a = 4V`2

Okay #1 Crew 1 travels a mile in 5 minutes correct? since they are rowing for 40 minutes total you would divide 40 total miles by 5 minutes. this gives the amount of miles crew 1 can row in 40 minutes. Next for crew 2 divide 40 by 8 minutes and that gives their total miles. next subtract crew 1 total miles from crew 2 total miles and you'll have your answer. #2 Since 2 1/2 only cover 1/3 of a driveway you will need to multiply 2 and 1/2 by 2 to get the rest of the driveway. #3 Pythagorean theorem is A^2 + B^2 = C^2 ...A squared + B squared = C squared Therefore, plug 6 feet in for A and 3 feet in for B and solve. This will give you your C which is your hypotenuse or the longest side of your triangle. Just google to explain it. #3a This should be B.... #4 So since this ones answer is in different units then the question you must first convert. 14 feet = 168 inches (12 inches per foot x 14 feet) and 7 days equals 168 hours. (24 hours per day x 7 days) Next you would divide the number of inches by the number of hours to get inches per hour. I hope I helped you a bit, math is stressful just relax. Good luck!

Use the Pythagorean Theorem, for a known right Δ with side lengths a, b, and c.
___________________________________________________

FIND: side length "a"

GIVEN: b=7 and c=9
______________________________________________

Pythagorean Theorem:

a² + b² = c²
_____________________________________________

SUBSTITUTE the GIVEN values using (parenthesis).
Then, SIMPLIFY using the order of opperations in math: PEMDAS
Simplify from Left to Right.

a² + b² = c²
a² + (7)² = (9)²
a² + 49 = 81
____________________________________________________

SOLVE for "a" by isolating the variable to one side of the equation.

Move everything else to the other side of the equation using the "opposite" opperation to BOTH sides of the equation.

Then Simplify.

a² + 49 = 81
a² + 49 - 49 = 81 - 49
a² = 32

And again, let's do the "opposite opperation to BOTH sides of the equation, to isolate the variable "a" on the left-hand-side of the equation.

a² = 32
√(a²) = √(32)

QUESTION: Do we know if "a" is positive or negative?

No, we don't.

Therefore, we must remember to use a "positive or negative" sign because the answer might be positive, it might be negative, or it might be both!
________________________________________________

± √(a²) = ± √(32)

We will determine the TRUE value by rereading the question.
__________________________________________________

QUESTION: What is the side "length" of the GIVEN right Δ with side lengths a, b, and c?

The "key" word, here, is length. We can only have POSITIVE distances, lengths, times, etc.

Therefore, since we are dealing with a "length", the ANSWER must be POSITIVE.

+ √(a²) = + √(32)
________________________________________

SIMPLIFYING further, we get:

+ √(a²) = + √(32)

a = √(32)
a = √(16) √(2)
____________________________

FINAL ANSWER:

a = 4 √(2)

a^2 + b^2 = c^2 sooooooo
a^2 = c^2 - b^2 = 9^2 - 7^2 = 81 - 49 = 32 = 16*2
So a = sqr[16*2] = 4sqr[2]
