I'm looking for a friendly hotel not too far from 1 Market Place. I've got an aversion to antiseptic huge chains, huge hotels. Ideally it'd be in a place with neighborhood restaurants, although that's not a huge issue.

How about the W San Diego. It only has about 150 rooms and they even call their lobby "the living room."
