I've recently opened up a paypal account and am thinking of selling some items (i.e. books, cds, videogames for example) . I have yet to understand fully how selling items on ebay works. But Is selling items on ebay really that complicated as people say it is?

The problem is that I don't want to start up a real business and get all these licenses from the government, I just want to sell items in a casual manner. Is it possible to not go to deep into the rabbit hole? And how?

thanks!

Thanks for all of your wonderful answers!

But just one more question. Do I have to sign up for a premier or business paypal account to sell items at ebay?

there are many FAKE MONEY ORDER scams floating around!

you need a PAYPAL PREMIER account as a seller. you MUST accept ALL forms of payment with PAYPAL, meaning CREDIT CARDS

good luck and beware the SCAMMERS that will find you, because you are a new seller.

you will get emails asking you all kinds of CRAP. offers to send you MORE money than the item ended for, etc...

these are SCAMMERS!

watch out!

You can sell as much or as little on Ebay as you like. SOme people do Ebay as a business and to others, it's just something fun to do and tehy sell a few things here and there. Read everything you can on the site though before you start selling. You need to know what you're doing, or at least have a clue, before you start selling.

I disagree with the answer above me....you will get more bids with paypal than without. There are A LOT of buyers who will only bid if paypal is accepted (me for one). Trust me, you WILL get more bids with paypal than without.

It really easy to sell with ebay I would start out selling only a few items the first week so you can get a feel for it and see what works and what dont. I my self sell with ebay and have found it easy I am a stay at home mom and its nice that you can take care of the selling pretty much 24 hours a day. Try it out you will find its not hard at all. Good luck

Yeah, sure, you don't have to go as far as having a 'Shop' on Ebay.... You can certainly just sell items casually, that's probably what the majority of Ebay users do!!

Basically, you set your account, (correct me if I'm wrong) - Ebay only takes a small percentage from you IF the item sells... If it doesn't sell, then you don't lose anything....

It starts costing a little bit when you want to upload multiple images of the item (which most people, I know I do) want to see when purchasing an item... It's still worth paying a bit to have the images...

So, in my opinion, Ebay is not complicated at all...

Good luck.

you don't need a licence at all. You just post your item, hope people bid on it (it's harder than you think sometimes - it has to be an item people are looking to buy). The when it sells, you wait for payment and then ship within 2 days. Ebay takes a small portion of the money at the end of the month.

Good luck. For things like cds and things, its often more expensive to buy packaging supplies than you will sell your item for.

Hi - this might help you. I have written it from my own experience selling 12,000 items on eBay. I, too, started off selling in a casual manner.

It is NOT complicated at all. If you can navigate the internet, you can do it.

I don't find it at all hard to do.
There are kits you can buy ebay that teach you the techniques to sell on ebay. If you don't mind spending 2-5 dollars I think it is worth it. But I also sell one on ebay. Ebay handle is diggscomp.

It is really easy to sell things on Ebay, if you are a US resident make sure you make things easy on yourself and write a note alerting everyone that you will only sell to US residents. When you start letting international bidders bid it gets more difficult to ship the packages.

Paypal only charges to receive money, after your 1st 100$. There is no fees of any kind. eBay cycles their fees so they do not become due till later in the month after said fee is incurred...
