Would like to go to Tahoe - was curious if there was any way to do it without chains? Is the I-80 route through North Lake Takoe, around the lake, any better?

Conditions change suddenly and dramatically. Generally, the CHP will turn you away without chains on board, but sometimes you might just get stuck up there for days upon days.

If you really don't want to "spring" for a set of chains, next month you should be good to go. For now, winter is still here and you don't want to end up like the Donner party.

they are usually required for all cars and trucks going up 80 & 50 to that area. CHP can and will refuse your passage if you don't have them and if you don't put them on. It is for your safety. I have seen one too many cars spin and cause accidents on those highways. you can usually buy them real cheap here in the bay area at any automotive store.Snow tires are allowed, but even 4 wheel drives with snow tires are required to carry chains with them.
