There are alot of diamonds that come out of africa. As you might know, there are over a dozen civil wars on that continent as we speak. There are also warlords that need money to wage war. Basically, blood diamonds mean that the money raised from harvesting the diamonds goes to bullets and bomb that cause bloodshed.

A blood diamond (also called a conflict diamond or a war diamond) is a diamond mined in a war zone and sold, usually clandestinely, in order to finance an insurgent or invading army's war efforts.
History

The United Nations (UN) in 1998 placed Angola under sanctions forbidding countries from buying diamonds from them. This resolution was the first resolution of the UN which specifically mentioned diamonds in the context of funding war. In 1999 the illicit diamond trade was estimated to have made up 3.06% of the world's diamond production. By 2004 this percentage had fallen to approximately 1%.

blood diamonds, also known as conflict diamonds, are diamonds mined in parts of Africa by slave labor under incredibly harsh conditions that are sold to major diamond distributors. The money from these diamonds is used by local warlords to buy weapons and ammunition to expand their territory.

Currently the diamond industry claims that they don't sell conflict diamonds, but they also admit there is no way of verifying the origin of every diamond they purchase.
