Check with your state fish and wildlife commission (or whatever your state calls it), and ask about the legality of owning one, because they are a protected species, but that could just be in various states, and not federally protected. DO NOT take one out of the wild. Most likely, if they are protected in your area (or federally) you will need to apply for a permit (which will depend on what type of reptile keeping experience you have, perhaps even depend on previous experience -with- diamondback terrapins). As for actually acquiring the terrapin, this is the hard part. Being a protected species, you aren't allowed to "buy, sell, or trade for value." You'd probably have to find someone else who has a permit and has a male and female and get one of their offspring. Most people I know who breed any reptile that has protections on it are -very- picky about who they give their babies to. Good luck.

I live in Oklahoma, US and we used to catch them for fun/pets. After my kids
grew up, we used to see them at regular nature parks and State and Fed parks as well as occasionally in our city yard or relatives yards in small home town. we'd mark the shell to see if it was the same one next time or next year -- ha -- the nature parks might let you do the same. Remember, if a nature
park has one -- you can find one EZ in any nearby land with water etc like in the park.
I'd imagine your zoo, local nature park, a conservation group or etc. could
tell you where to find them [if they're native to your area]]. If not, try: pet shop,
newspaper [someone will have info], or groups in the first paragraph. Also
look for reference in your home state web sites. Hope this helps.
A good web search [search engine] should tell you WHERE to locate the native locations or geographies

I'm not sure but isn't it illegal to own or sell Diamondback Terrapins? I work with a Diamond back Terrapin release program and I'm ashamed to say I'm not sure are they illegal to own and sell?
DO NOT TAKE THEM OUT OF THE WILD THAT IS ILLEGAL THEY ARE ENDANGERED!

Diamonbacks were just put on the protected species list a few months ago, it is now illegal to own one unless you have special permits
