what are the best software or applications for computer for a college student?

I suppose to really answer your question we'd need to know what you are going to use the software for.

If you are just entering college I'd say you need Word, or some sort of word processing program. You might also need Excel. Word and Excel come together in one package. I got mine at the College bookstore for about $20 (just remember it was cheaper than at the computer stores) and I still have it and use it in my daily life, long after college. It came with no fancy dressings just the cd and codes to open it up with.
