Soccer has won the world over, but it hasn't won the west. Soccer will always be on the same list as curling, when it comes to popularity in North America. Hockey, Baseball, and Football (the tough man type), dominate and even the over paid gangsta uneducated NBA league, gets more popularity.

To say that soccer hasn't won the West because it's not so popular in North America is ridiculously ignorant. No mention of all the Central and South American countries that live for football. Grow up.

I think the main attractiveness of soccer is the fact that it is a relatively inexpensive sport, is fairly easy to participate in and is easy to learn and to acquire basic skills.
Soccer can be learned and played by different age levels. It is also open to both boys and girls. It's a good sport.
It does not do well in the American market, for a couple of reasons. First, it is a low scoring game, as are baseball and hockey, and that will tend to limit fan interest. Second, it doesn't have enough time-outs and breaks to allow television commercials, and that limits television interest.
In the American market Football, basketball, and baseball are dominant sports, mainly because of fan interest. Hockey probably makes it to fourth place.

soccer (or association football) is the most popular recognised sport in the world.
it is popular partly because it doesn't require much equipment (other than a ball, which can be improvised, as can goalposts) and because the rules and main aim of the game are easy to understand.
also, unlike games such as rugby, you can be any build and be able to play well. you can't rely just on your height and strength
