I just recently started using Ubuntu. I had never had any experience with any unix based system. I downloaded Edgy, the latest release and have been amazed. It runs fine on even an old machine I had, with only 128 RAM. In addition, it only took me a day before I had my own web server running. I would recommend Kubuntu, which just uses KDE as the graphic interface instead of GNOME. The install was easy and very straight forward. Also, the wiki pages on the Ubuntu site along with a million forums make getting questions answered easy. Basically Ubuntu has made it possible for a lifetime Windows user to convert to Linux in a very short time while only gaining features and functionality.

the most user-friendly linux by far. i popped the cd in and everything just worked i clicked install and in 15 minutes i had a dual-boot linux environment. Windows on the other hand takes about an hour to install and copmletely erases your hard drive. i'm going to switch exclusively to ubuntu soon.

Great distro, one of the most controversial but best by far. While others are multiple CDs or even entire DVD and offers conflicting multiple choices upfront (which is very counter productive and confusing in my view) there is only 1 CD with 1 set of initial programs in Ubuntu, expandable like Debian systems should.
