Correct me if I am wrong but aren't all employers supposed to be EOE? And if so why do a few put it in their ads? Also isn't it discriminating for a job ad to say bilingual is required or a must? Why do I need to learn another language to get a job in a country I WAS BORN IN???????

I share in your thoughts! While it is true that no company should reject a potential employee on the basis of race, religion, . . . IT STILL HAPPENS! Whether or not that stupid EOE thing is at the bottom of their ad! I have a friend named Tishonda (she is white) and she gets rejected when she puts her entire first name on her resume. However, when she puts T., she gets calls! Sometimes she sends out the same resume with the different titles just to see what jobs she doesn't want! As for the language nonsense. . .I believe it is wrong to reject someone just because they don't speak a second language. I can, however, understand why this happens. The company you will be representing as an employee does not want to alienate large sections of the population by not properly marketing to them (ie. with ads or representatives that don't speak the clients' language). Problems with this: 1.) We alienate our people, 2.) Even "lesser" jobs (fry cook, maintenance person, and the like) require another language. These jobs don't always require high levels of education which is usually how second languages are learned, and 3.) Most jobs don't pay extra for your knowledge of a second language; especially if it is in the job requirements. This whole thing makes me mad! And I speak 2 languages! But I refuse to put the second language down because, as I have learned, you become the token translator and other job tasks get set aside because you end up doing more work that you signed up for and then you get accused of not being able to do you job properly! It's maddening! But I digress... The real question is what can we do about it? Besides being total racists and rejecting immigrants? How can we welcome immigrants without rejecting our own people?

The only reason they would require that is that the other language would be used in the position. That makes it a bona fide job requirement. There are no EEOC ramifications here.

I think it is stupid for anyone to move to a new country & NOT learn the language.

It depends on what the clientel is. If it is a low-income medical office, or something of that nature, they need someone that can speak Spanish.
