It all depends on if David Wells and Greg Maddux stay healthy. If they do, the Padres have a solid shot.

It all starts with pitching, and the Padres are 1A (with the Dodgers being 1) in the division's pitching staffs. If Randy Johnson finds the Fountain of Youth, then Arizona immediately vaults past both the Dodgers and Padres in pitching, but I don't see any pitcher finding what Ponce de Leon sought.
As far as hitting goes, it could be argued that the Padres have (at best) the third-best lineup in the division (behind the Dodgers and Rockies) or (at worst) the division's worst lineup (even worse than the unproven D-Backs and aging Giants).
With my thoughts on the pitching and hitting of the NL West, I believe that, barring serious injury/injuries, the Dodgers are the team to beat, and the Padres will have to settle for the Wild Card if they want to make the postseason. Below are my predictions.
1. Dodgers
2. Padres
3. Giants
4. Rockies
5. Diamondbacks

Even though the Padres got Marcus Giles, Greg Maddux and David Wells, this was offset by the fact that several other teams in the division helped themselves out even more. The Padres will not be a bad offensive team, however, the two pitchers they signed are on the downside of their careers and cannot be expected to win more than 10-12 games each. Until they get some good young starting pitchers, I'd look for them to end up near the bottom of the league.

No. The dodgers have taken their team to another level while the Padres invested in two 40 year old pitchers.
They could finish 3rd or 4th if the Giants and Rockies show up this year.

Well, I didn't like their moves- honestly they didn't do much of ANYTHING to address their real issue. Admittedly, they do a great job of grabbing pitching talent cheap: Wolf, Wells, and Maddux are all bargains in this market. Unfortunately, they forgot to take their extra money and actually GET SOME HITTING. So I don't think they did enough to win the West, but they did at least keep some money aside to hopefully pick up a hitter along the line.

No, they needed to get a big bat to compliment rising star Adrian Gonzalez. Instead they lost Roberts, Piazza and Barfield. I don't see them scoring many runs with their current lineup. That's going to be a problem no matter how good the pitching staff is.
