Abraham Lincoln... Child Molester!?

Question

I was in my highschool history class and my teacher said that there has been evidence uncovered in the past that honest Abe had children as slaves and molested them on a regular basis. This didnt seem right to me and I asked him about it and he said that it was because blacks werent people back then so it was okay.

Is this correct?

I am certain this is garbage. However it is a known fact Lincoln like most people in that era was a racist. Please do not come and argue with me me instead read what Lincolns plan was for the slaves; also "Forced Into Glory: Abraham Lincoln's White Dream" by Lerone Bennett, Jr. Bennett being one of the lead Afro American writer of the day!

Not only did Lincoln not molest slave children, he did not OWN slaves. Abraham Lincoln was an abolitionist who ran for Congress and President on a straight anti-slavery platform. Even his father moved the family out of Kentucky when Abraham was a boy because he disapproved of slavery. I think your teacher is either mixing Lincoln up with some other figure, or else your teacher is just making stuff up.

I find this statement to be highly repulsive and historically reckless. First of all, there is no evidence of the Lincolns either owning slaves or employing black servants before he was inaugurated as President in 1861.

Secondly, since the children Abraham and Mary Rodd Lincoln were all boys, your history teacher's statements not only makes one the greatest Presidents the USA ever had a pedophile, but a bisexual pedophile as well. Personally, I don't believe it of Lincoln.

I don't feel that, in light of these outrageous allegations, you would be out of line to ask for some reputable proof. Read the material that your teacher is using as sources, but I would also read Carl Sandburg's "Lincoln," and "Lincoln" by Gore Vidal. Look for Lincoln on the web via Dogpile as well.

Perhaps your teacher has Abraham Lincoln confused with Thomas Jefferson? His affair with Sally Jennings began when she was a teenager, and she was his wife's half sister although a slave. In southern society, it was frowned upon to sleep with your slaves, although many white male slave owners did. When Jefferson's involvement with Sally was talked about in Washington after he became President, it was a scandal. Jefferson dealt with it by refusing to talk or write of it.

I personally do not believe that Abraham Lincoln abused anyone EVER. It's a shame that the South did not have a chance to experience Reconstruction under Lincoln. Not that it would have been perfect, but it would have been a darned sight better than the way it went down.

NO, This is not correct. Abraham Lincoln helped bring into legislation and later signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which was an official document ensuring that all slave-owners had to free their slaves with the allotted time period. Abraham Lincoln was a married man and had children with his wife Mary. There has never been any documentation or evidence that he EVER molested children. Your teacher must be one of those stupid liberals.

This is the first that I have heard this accusation. It seems hard to believe. Especially since his Emancipation Proclamation stated that all men were created equal and one of the main reasons that the civil war was fought was because of the Souths slavery. I don't want to say your teacher is wrong, but I just have never heard this before and I'm 50 years old and a history buff.

NO NO NO. Lincoln did NOT own slaves. Your teacher is a pathetic MORON. Where did he get his degree? I have a master's and doctorate in US history, and my thesis was in nineteenth century US history, specifically Civil War history. Tell him he is a rabble rouser and should become a greeter at Wal-Mart for that is ALL he is qualified to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Emily, you need to do more research or change your major. Frederick Douglass said of LIncoln he was the first white man he met that he felt was devoid of racism. Did Lincoln believe in the superiority of caucasians, yes but that was the Zeitgeist of the time.

Not only was Abraham Lincoln a child molestor, he molested HIS OWN CHILDREN! He slept with numerous black slave women over the years, and had lots of children out of wedlock, most of whom he molested.

This teacher needs to be a little more careful of what they say from the lectern. Don't buy it, always ask for proof. Ask where this was written, publication, etc. Good for you for questioning.
