You know why these guys are idiots? Because ALL THE DECENT COACHES HAVE BEEN PICKED UP ALREADY! Unless they convince Bill Parcells to head west, I don't know who they plan on convincing to coach. If they wanted to fire Marty so bad, they should've fired him a month ago so they could've interviewed candidates OR promoted Cam Cameron OR Wade Phillips to coach. Now they have NO head coach, NO Offensive Coordinator, and NO Defensive Coordinator. I'm shocked..the Chargers are usually better than this with their personnel decisions.

Schott and Smith have been having issues for awhile...lossing coaches and coordinators that would have to be replaced for, potentially, one last year of Marty's contract...
Realistically, this is a logical move. Maybe handled poorly, and timing may even seem off. However, with this timing, I'm betting the Chargers already have the replacement picked...though they'll go through the usual interviews regardless.
This is not a dumb front office. They have done some things I've questioned that have worked very well...ie letting Brees leave and replacing him with Rivers. I don't know whether we'll see the likes of Pete Carroll, Dan Reeves, or Joan Rivers as the new head coach, but I'm certain this action is part of a plan...not a knee jerk.

Until now I thought the most idiotic stunt was when Jimmy Johnson was insulted and quit/fired as Cowboys coach. This just proves what I have been saying for the longest in all situations where dumb moves are made: The idiots are running the asylum. Can we say 1-15 for the 2007 season for the Chargers? I bet Jerry Jones wishes he would have waited a few days and he could have gotten the whole Charger staff.
If I were the owner of the Chargers, Schottenheimer would have been the last to go. Some folks just aren't suited for front office. To answer your summary, yeah their front office is on something. Maybe they're drinking from the same cup as the NY Knicks are. They did get rid of Larry Brown. So go figure.

I have a lot of respect for the San Diego Chargers, but I am totally confused by this move after ALL the jobs were filled. Unless they are looking to bring in Ron Rivera from Chicago, they have VERY slim pickens out there. They should have fired Marty just after he refused the extension. This way they could have promoted Cameron.
I thought, even if they lost their Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Coordinator, Tight Ends Coach, and Linebacker coach, MAYBE, just maybe, they could get to the playoffs on sheer talent next season.
HOWEVER, making this move so late...it's looking kinda grim. I mean they certainly have the talent...that's not the problem. The problem is, how are you going to replace all the coaches that coach their KEY players? Tight Ends - Antonio Gates, Linebackers - Shawne Merriman, plus all their play calling coaches! How they recover is beyond me...but I wish them luck and hope that something happens soon.

I think Schottenheimer's postseason record really kills him. The guy just can't win in the playoffs. Everyone (including me) thought the Chargers had a good enough team to get to the Super Bowl and once again a Schottenheimer team did not get the job done.
I'm not a Chargers fan but I like the team they have and I hope they can bring someone in who will get them playoff ready.
Oh, and the silliest move in football over the last six months has been every time the Lions didn't fire Matt Millen.

It is understandable that Charger fans would appreciate Marty's contribution, but there are football analysts and commentators in places as far away as Boston who view Schottenheimer as unable to win important games, especially playoff games. According to the Yahoo article, he has not won a playoff game since 1993. Exhibit A this year would be going on 4th and 11 in the first quarter of a nothing-nothing ball game.

I think the Chargers front office will be sorry for this move. Hey me might of lost a big playoff game against the Patriots, but all the teams who's season was over and sitting at home are thinking he going to get that monkey off the back one day and will pick him up. Don't you know all these teams that hire new coaches this season wish they would of done it earlier.

A.J. Smith has been against Schottenheimer since he was hired. They have disagreed on personnel issues for the last three years, Drew Brees for example. With San Diego losing two coodinators and two assistants the last couple of weeks, according to the team president they have become "Dysfunctional". So they made the move. They will rue the day they fired him.

The Chargers mistake was underestimating the demand that their coordinators Cam Cameron and Wade Phillips would have. Both of them recently became head coaches and since they have to re-stock those important positions, it doesn't make sense to keep Marty for just one more year - especially when he has proven that he can't win the big games.

I can agree with all the answers ahead of mine. But I think the Bolts should have gone after better coaches and players to support M.S. in the next season. After that, if they didn't improve, then I would have changed coaches.
But like I said, There are some things that I agree with here that could be done as well.
