Does anyone know of a literary work where the main theme is dillusionment when a mythical world turns out to be much less than expected? You know, when a society believes in the existence of a utopian golden city or something, and when the hero explorer finds the place, but it turns out to be nothing special at all?

Erewhon, brave New World, out of the silent planet, Dystopia, the chrysalids, etc. It's a common theme.
