My friend suggested that I take o-chem and become a biochemist. I am taking the class and I am an engineering student. It is too much memorization. Any advise on not going insane.

One class is not going to make you a biochemist! You have a bigger picture to look at. If you take Engineering, Chemistry and Biology programs you'll be in school for quite a while! Maybe try an internship or something and see what you like. Also, maybe taking the organic will help you decide..it's good to take lots of things and see what you like...but in the end you do have to make a decision.
