the modulus or the positive value of 4n+6=23

e.g l 23 l= 23
l -23 l =23

l 4n+6 l = 23
this means that
either 4n+6=23 OR
4n+6=-23

either 4n=17 or 4n=-29
n=19/4 or n=-29/4

When a problem has the absolute value sign - you have two solutions. One is equal to (23) & the other is equal to (- 23).

1. | 4n + 6 | = 23

First: rewrite the expression, excluding the abosolute value sign...

4n + 6 = 23

Sec: subtract 6 from both sides (when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign)....

4n + 6 - 6 = 23 - 6

4n = 23 - 6

4n = 17

Third: isolate "n" on one side --- divide both terms by "4"....

4n/4 = 17/4

n = 17/4

2. | 4n + 6 | = - 23

First: rewrite the expression, excluding the abosolute value sign...

4n + 6 = - 23

Sec: subtract 6 from both sides (when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign)....

4n + 6 - 6 = - 23 - 6

4n = - 23 - 6

4n = - 29

Third: isolate "n" on one side --- divide both terms by "4"....

4n/4 = - 29/4

n = -29/4

Solutions: 17/4 & -29/4

My favorite way of solving these is to get rid of the absolute signs by squaring the whole thing, collect terms, and solve the resulting quadratic by the usual methods. In this case, that is overkill; it can be done easily enough by solving the two equations 4n + 6 = 23, and 4n + 6 = -23, which give the two values needed.

there are 2 solutions
1
4n+6=23 subtract 6 from each side
4n=17 divide by 4
n=4.25

2
4n+6=-23 subtract 6 from each side
4n=-29 divide by 4
n=-7.25
