I am an omnivore. (That means that my species, human, can and will eat anything that dose not eat it first.) My dog is a carnivore (she prefers to eat meat over the cheep dog chow I can afford to give her). So are the cats I'm trying to tame enough to catch and take to the vet for shots and neutering. Some birds are omnivores, like chickens. Others are exclusively carnivores in that they only eat bugs or small mammals (Owls, hawks and eagles).Other birds only eat grain, nuts, berry's, etc.
I had a pig once and had to work very hard to NOT make it a pet. I even named him Pork Chop to keep reminding myself why I'd bought him.
I gave him the best life I could, then he gave me several months of real good eating and I thank him for it. Just as I try to remember to thank the chicken I get from the Colonel, the cow I get from Mikey D, and the poor neglected veggies that no one else even considers who also give their lives that we may live.
As I said above, I am a human. I can choose not to eat meat. But I do not. First off, I like it. Secondly, have any of the folks who want us to stop eating meat or animal products thought of what will happen to all the various 'meat' animals if we no longer grow them for meat. The Farmers and Ranchers won't keep them and they won't, they can't turn them loose either. There just isn't enough room for the massive flokes of chickens, or herds of cows and pigs to roam around looking for food. They'd all end up killed anyway so why not eat them.
By the way it is not illeagle to be a vegitarian in Texas. I'm a Texan and know folks who are vegitarian.

Because they disassociate the meat they buy at the grocery store from the animals it comes from. It;s not that difficult to do. People naturally are supposed to eat meat, but they also enjoy the companionship of animals. It;s just the way life works.

What I have trouble understanding though are people who raise animals that can be both food or pets. For example, people who breed rabbits for meat or show, yet consider some of the rabbits their pets, while others are shipped off the the processing companies, or even killed by the breeders to eat themselves. Not criticizing, I just think that would be hard to do.

Well, the most common pets out there are carnivores. Dogs and cats, the two most common pets in North America, both eat meat. If someone has a problem with eating meat, how could they own these pets?

If this were the only worst things people do, this world would be a much better place. I suppose that they don't stop to think enough. Culture for those people is very strong in telling them it's ok. Maybe their pets are different species than what those people eat. Maybe they are cruel and greedy. I can see keeping a cat or bird or dog and eating chicken or beef, but people who raise animals to eat and become friendly with them in the meantime... that's really creepy.

Eating meat is nothing bad. In fact if you don't eat meat and dont take a ton of vitamins (to replace all the stuff you're body is missing out on) then eventually your muscles begin to break down. It's very unhealthy to cut meat out of your diet completely. There's a big difference between food and a friend.

It's because there's a difference between livestock and pets. Livestock is the meat animals that you don't pay attention to. Pets are the animals you breed to be companions. You grow up eating meat, and you grow up with pets. It's just how things work.

when we eat meat this means that we dont eat our pets, we love them. God put the livestock and the other animals on the earth so we could live. Remeber he will take care of us.
