Usually when you hear a pop, you've torn something, probably a ligamentt. The ankle isn't a very stable joint, and sprains are common at that site. If it's black and blue, hurts even when your not using it, and very inflamed, you most likely have a 2nd to 3rd degree sprain. Until you can go see a doctor, ice it, keep it elevated, and try to relieve as much pressure from that ankle as possible. Take some ibuprofen for the pain. It's definitely not a good idea to play football which is such a high contact sport until you've been cleared by a doctor.

You need to strengthen them specifically. Do you wrap them or wear supports when you run? You need to do that. Also to strengthen them, lift weights. You can do it pretty easy right while sitting on the computer. I used to do what I called ankle lifts, I was a former dancer, among things. Put a soup can in a basket or something with a handle. While sitting, pick it up with your foot hold it so your leg is level straight out. Do this repeatedly 10 times and hold the basket up for 10 seconds, as your ankle gets stronger do longer times.

Go to an orthopedic doctor. It sounds like a lack of support from the muscles supporting your ankle. Since you have obviously done some sort of damage, see a good doc to determine how to best rebuild the strength.

you might need to consult either an excercise physiotherapist or an orthopedic physician. you might be able to correct it with some exercises or the use of wraps/braces, but if you continue to run and keep twisting, the possibility of permanent damage increases.

I've had the same problem for decades. Never saw a doctor. I guess it couldn't hurt to see a doctor because maybe they can do something to help you.

Yeah- I think you'd better have that checked out. It's probably nothing serious, but better to be safe- than in a wheelchair.
