I am assuming you don't write professionally in the manner you typed this question! You have two options if you are interested in traditional publishing:
Small Press: normally do not require an agent. You should send a query letter highlighting your book idea and request the publisher's guidelines. If they are interested, they will tell you how to submit your work.
Large publishers: Normally require an agent. And agent is a professional that will help you place your book. An agent only gets paid when they place your book with a publisher. If the agent asks for money up from, or tries to sell you add-on services, he/she is a scam.
Your friends are probably not the ones to be offering career advice. When I was in high school, my friends all thought I was a brilliant writer. It was when I got to college and took real courses in writing that I realized how much my early work SUCKED! Remember, friends and family WANT to like what you write. They are not inclined to read your work objectively or critically.
Personally, I think it is best to start small and build a name. Start my submitting short stories to magazines that publish that sort of work. Writer's Digest and The Writer magazine always have dozens of listings of new markets. This will get you in the habit of submitting work to publishers and help you learn a bit about the process.

No one can give you a magic bullet that makes everything work for you. The only way to do it is to knuckle down and write it. Writing, even comedy writing, is a job, and you need to treat it as seriously as a job.
The world is full of people who want to be writers or think they ought to write. You know the differene between them and the people who actually get published? The published writers persevere. That's all.

If you want to write, you have to wait for inspiration. I write a lot of stories, and I always have to wait for ideas before I start writing. Don't force yourself to start or you won't write a good story. If you have an inspiration, then just go for it and right whatever comes into your mind. Also free-association writing can help you get ideas as well, that means putting your pen to paper and just writing down anything. Don't look at what you've written while you're writing, just look at it when you finish, and who knows, maybe you can make a story out of the things you've written! Or it can get your creativity going as well. Good luck!

You needn't actually take classes. The same things that are learned there can be learned on one's own, and I find that to be more valuable, it shows stronger character.
Quite simply, set yourself six to eight hours in a day, and divide those between reading(very important for writers) and writing. If you want to get it published then it is a job and you should do it fulltime.
Improving your spelling and grammar in other places can't hurt either.

Jim:
Save your stories, make notes to remember things people say or do that makes you chuckle. Stories that interest you. When you are ready, write your book. I saved my stories for almost 40 years but was to busy with work and raising children to find time to write. When I retired I took my notes and wrote not one but two books.
The second only because of requests from my readers to do so.
Write the stories when you are in the mood. Sort them later into your book. Hope I have been of some help. Some of my stories on site below if this will help you.

You have to give yourself the answer to this question. I would suggest checking your writing and are you sure you want to publish, so others can read it.
