Can someone explain to me the end scenes of "Escape from New York" and "Escape from L.A."?

I love those movies, but I think both of them have stupid endings.
In the first movie, the president was going to present something recorded on a tape so that the world's nations may hopefully live in peace. But Snake Pliskin destroys the tape.

In the second movie, Snake activates the code which causes satellites to shut down everything electronic on the Earth.
