Believe me you'll know. It's very very gelatinous and there's usually quite a bit of it. It's also got quite a bit of blood in it.
Most pregnant women have a lot of discharge when they're pregnant, particularly towards the end of the pregnancy - some more than others. I constantly had to wear pantyshields towards the end. The amount that comes out would more than fill your hand - quite revolting really. If you're still unsure, check with your GP.
The link attached is the best web site on pregnancy I've come across (and I'm a research librarian). Good luck!

This may sound gross but I lost mine when I was on the toilet, I was just starting to go into labour. I didn't really see what it looked like because there was a lot of blood also. I was going to the toilet when I felt something come out and heard a splash as it hit the water. I told the midwife when I got to the hospital and she said it was probably the mucus plug.

The morning I went in labour with my son I had a tiny bit of blood when I wiped and thought, "oh, that was my mucous plug"
I was wrong!!! After arriving at the hospital, a nurse gave me a rough internal and loosen it..when i went to the bathroom, a huge chunk of jelly-like loogie..lol, it was big, it's not just a bit of discharge or whatever..sometimes it can have tinges of blood, or lots of blood. You will know when you see it.
It's a chunk of mucous.

Both my best friends said there's no way you could miss it. It's a big nasty slimy ball of mucus. It doesn't hurt, but it's cold and wet and you're gonna wanna throw away your panties. Lucky me; I didn't lose my mucus plug during labor.

Sometimes you can tell, sometimes you can't. I had 3 babies and I only "saw" it with 1. If you lose it in a clump it's like a jellyfish w/o the tenticles (clear or bloody). You can also lose it little by little, and it looks like clear or bloody discharge (gross I know, sorry). Or you may not ever see it. Here's a hint: if you're dialated past 1cm, you lost it.

Sometimes you don't know you've lost it.. It can come out in small pieces that you won't notice or it will all come out at once and that I promise you will see.... It's not a pretty sight..

There's no way to tell unless you see it by wiping or it falls in the toilet.
