I am an interior designer and was around paint quite a bit while pregnant and it is fine. That is, as long as you are using water based latex paints. The hazards are with solvent based products and if you are removing any old paint that might contain lead. It is best to work in a well ventilated area. I specifically asked my doctor about this when I was pregnant and she told me exactly what I just told you! My son is now 3 and perfect as can be!

I painted my dughters nursery while I was pregnant and there were no side effects. Just make sure you have a well ventilated room - keep the windows and door open and turn on some fans. Go for a walk outside straight away after to get some clean air in you. If you are really worried you can get some paints that are safe to use. In Australia Resene have some good paints. Their website is www.resene.com.au Good Luck!

I'm currently painting my nursery a light sky blue, but I keep the room well ventilated and try not to over do it. My doctor said it was fine, that the most danger is not my baby being born with birth defects, but with my feeling dizzy from the fumes itself. So I left all windows open while painting, with a fan to use as an exhaust. To avoid overexposure, I take frequent breaks and never sleep in that same room (just to be on the safe side). If you're very worried, consult your doctor since every pregnant woman's body is different. Good luck!

If you must paint, make sure you follow these guidelines to decrease the likelihood of paint exposure:
Protect your skin by wearing protective clothing that includes long pants, long-sleeved shirts and gloves
Be certain that the room and house are well ventilated; open the windows and turn on fans
Limit the time you spend on the project; take breaks and move into the fresh air frequently
Keep your food and drinks away from the area so solvents and chemicals will not accidentally be consumed
Use only latex paint.

You can paint but ONLY latex paint (which is common house indoor paint). Make sure the room is very well ventillated, and even wear a mask if you want. I painted walls with my kids, and they all came out fine . . . no mutants :) Just don't use any oil based paints. That is very bad, and yes , it can cause major problems. It'd be better to have someone else do it, or to wait. But it can be safe if you're careful! If in doubt, always ask your OB :)
PS All the stupid answers are from guys. Don't listen to them. "It stretches your stomach!" LOL Yeah, right.

I would have lots of ventilation while painting. Open windows even wear a face surgical mask. Depending on what kind of paint used it could cause a problem. Oil paint has toxic vapors.

I painted my daughter's nursery when I was in the last of my 2nd trimester, just make sure to vent the room well and take many breaks too! My daughter was born just fine healthy as a horse and no problems at all I delivered her right on schedule. I hope this helps!

i want to paint too. i heard some bad stories about a lady that had a misscarraige the night after she painted. I don't know though... it is not good.. but I can't see that causing soemthing that serious unless you breathed in alot and it posines you. I know you can get 'high' from too much paint fumes...
