MID comes from the Latin word MEDIUS and the Greek one MESOS, meaning MIDDLE.
So, Mid-May means in the middle of the month of May.

Mid-- May means in the middle of the month of May. Or, some time around the 15th of May, plus or minus a couple of days.

Just as "mid--day" means in the middle of the day,....near noon, or somewhere roughly between say 11 am and 1 pm.

Mid-may means about the 14th, 15th or 15th. Where do you get before may? I don't see the connection.
