An inmate currently serving time in a Texas prison on criminal charges needs an attorney to represent him on an issue concerning his sentence. He has absolutely no money. How can he find legal representation at little or no cost? Can he hire a public defender?

You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you.

My suggestion would be to either contact a legal aid organization or contact a law school in the state- often times they offer help for free- just ask to speak with a member of their legal clinic. Public defenders are not for hire- they work for the state and to my knowledge don't handle criminal appeals. Your prison should have a library- look up filing a writ of habeus corpus.

There are a lot of jail house lawyers in prison, I am sure one of them can tell him exactly what to do. I doubt if he can hire a public defender, public defenders are suppose to be free to the public. As for as his sentence, tell him to contact the attorney he used before.

Yes, a public defender is about his only choice, poor fellow.
