Yes, you can still breastfeed.

From the few details you gave, it is difficult to determine why your breastmilk has not come through. However, I know that even adoptive parents are able to induce lactation to breastfeed, so I am sure that something can be done to re-establish your supply if you really want to (I think it is fantastic that you want to do it!)

I highly recommend contacting a lactation consultant immediately. You need to find someone who can meet with you personally to help you, and if the one you meet first doesn't know what to do (yes, it's possible), find another one. There are herbal supplements that you can take to increase milk supply, as well as lots of tips (like lots of rest, fluids, and on-demand nursing, if possible). If the milk is completely gone, it's possible you may need some sort of horomone treatment to induce lactation (probably not the case if your baby is only 3 weeks old).

In any case, it can be done but I wouldn't recommend trying it without the help of a professional who has been trained to deal with situations such as these. If you really want to do it, be persistent and patient.

Congratulations and good luck!

Yes! There is help. :)

First off, find a La Leche League group. A leader there will help you enormously. Google La Leche League and the name of the city you live in for a start.

Second, find a lactation consultant. Make sure she's board certified.

Third, buy an SNS. that's Supplemental Nursing System. You can put formula into a bottle and run it through a tube to your nipple so that when you're nursing the baby the baby gets formula.

Fourth, buy or rent a good pump. WIC can help you out with that if you're American and qualify for it.

Fifth and most important: Nurse nurse nurse! The more you put that baby on your breast, the better chance you have of getting that milk to come in.

Also, do see your doctor.

I hope all this helps.

dont feel bad many mothers have trouble nursing. my first baby did wonderfully and my second child just refused to nurse. if you are dead set on breastfeeding, the hospital you delivered at should have a lactation consultant. theres a device i dont know the name of it but, it holds milk in a container and has a tube that the mother attaches to her brest usually with like first aid tape. the baby gets food but still sucks at the breast. the babys sucking motion is supposed to create a reaction in the mothers that will cause the milk come in. if nothing helps, dont feel bad. some people try to make moms who cant or dont nurse bad, but the most important thing is that the baby gets the nourishment he/she needs. hope this helps.
