well, phoenix, everyone always tells me that all 12 months celebrate white history. can anyone give an example of this?

i believe the reason why people keep asking this question is because the answerers keep giving the same shitty, unsatisfying answers like "all the other months are white history" and "all the othre TV channels are white entertainment" with no explanation. seriously, who the hell cares what race the people in the shows you watch are? deal with it! i guess i don't want there to be a WET, but why does there have to be BET and asian tv? there are shows with black people on other channels anyway. just not as many as ones with white people.

Every month is white history. The only time we hear about black history is during black history month or some black holiday. Add more black history throughout the school year and then we can get rid of the month. Growing up we heard about all the great things whites had done throughout history. Occasionally we would briefly talk about Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. and Rosa Parks. But you would think that there were no other great blacks to discuss. I'm 26 years old and every year during Black History Month, I learn something new about our history. It would have been nice to learn this as a child, but better now than never.

The same goes for magazines. I used to subscribe to Fortune magazine, then I came to a conclusion that there was only white folks in there, except for on black history month. For the longest time I wondered if blacks weren't doing enough to get into the magazine. Then I found Black Enterprise and to my surprise there are successful black people in this country. So you know my subscription changed.

As for television, every channel is white owned and caters to a white audience. The majority of shows out there are full of whites and rarely have any minorities. I believ friends is a good example of this. Show was on the air for ten years, the show took place in the most deverse city in world and all you saw were whites. If they do feature minorities were doing something negative. BET is all we got that caters to what blacks wish to see. And you guys complain about one channel when ya'll have many.

If you wish to see Black History month and BET come to an end. The solution is simple, let's hear about Black History throughout the year. And how about more blacks on TV and in roles that show blacks in a positive role.

Because for whatever reason, those with the power to create these holidays or television stations simply chose not to do so. Black history month is just that. It's a month long celebration of black history. To be honest with you I don't fully understand why there is a black history month and not a white history month or any other for that matter but I truly believe that when it was first created, someone wanted to right some wrong and educate people on how things were and how they would change over time. There is no denying in black history that there were wrongs done to African Americans and maybe that isn't worthy of a holiday in some people's eyes but the people who approved it believed that this was a step towards a clean conscious and a better America.

This question has been answered about 400 times, but since I'm bored:

Black History Month isn't really a celebration so much as it is a time to recognize historical figures and events that would not otherwise be recognized. I don't bother recognizing Black History Month because I believe in incorporating all important history throughout the year. There is no need for a White History Month because the majority of U.S. history on the books is about Whites, but I think you knew that already. As for White Entertainment Television, the same concept applies. In order to see Black people in serious dramatic roles on television, viewers have to turn elsewhere.

Black history month celebrates the history of black people in America and it's a month to remember important people in the civil rights movement like Martin Luther King Jr. If it wasn't for people like Martin Luther King Jr, black people may not have the same rights that they have today in America. Black history month is celebrated in the United States and Canada.

"and also, why isn't there a white history month?"
White history month is basically every month of the year.
History is about past events, and most events that happened over 20 years ago (good or bad) were caused by white people. Black people couldn't even get a seat on a bus, and if they were lucky, they they could go to the back but only if no white person was sitting there.

"and while we're at it, why isn't there a white entertainment television?"
Maybe you should watch more NBC, CBS, ABC.

Black History month is to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Blacks.

There is no White history month because:
1. the other 11 months are white history month.

2. Every month in every history class is white (usually male) history month. Sure, sometimes you get the little sidebar in the textbook about this or that famous black person/white woman.

3. Because white history has not been lost, stolen or suppressed over the years as much as black history has.

And as far as you saying "why isn't there a white entertainment television"....... There is it's called NBC,FOX, ABC and CBS. Those shows are majority white. There is no all black, asian or hispanic cast on any of those networks, they're all white. It's basically aimed at White people. Oh wait there's one exception and that's the George Lopez show on ABC. That's it! So there are your all white networks!

Why is there a problem with Black History month?? Do you really think it's racist or that horrible to have 1 month, 28 days, where Black people are recognized for their contribution to the US?? Through out my education, we were not taught about anything relating to black History because it was sooo far at the back of the book we would never reach it, except for during Black History month, when we stopped learning about white explorers, white inventions, white presidents, European travels, how America was massacred and stolen and then labeled a discovery.

Here's a simple test...
Go to a store, like Wal-mart and look for the number of black dolls on the shelf. Usually, they're not there, or they're behind the white dolls.

Watch a major TV show, count the number of white people you see vs ANY minorities. Aren't they entertaining you??

If you don't watch BET, you won't see 75% of the music videos they play. You'll see a few token Black characters as "co-hosts."

Is it really that bad, and that damning to white people, for there to be months that recognize the world is NOT all about them??

ETA: You'll continue to get the same answer until you stop asking the same question....

Are you serious black people have been here longer than ALMOST any other minority groups that's why!!! The same reason white people are everywhere and have all there businesses, Are you guys segregating yourself?? No!! You have achieved alot of goals and now black people are as well. We have our own shows, our own everything and we worked just as hard if not harder to get it!!! Now other races are doing the same. We whine!! What are you all doing on here!!!! Everywhere I go I see other cultures making lives from themselves over here but black people have been here educated ourselves that's why there are so many black colleges, getting good job, starting businesses, programs, and organizations. Sometimes it seems like Racist people are mad that we have made a way for ourselves and come this far. Well guess what stop your whining and get used to it.

How the hell do you not know what black history month is for? Don't you know any black people? The smart thing to do would be to ask them. I'm trying to put this as nicely as I can without using big words so I don't confuse you.

To answer you question, black history month is a time for blacks to celebrate their history and to see what we have accomplished over the years. If you want a White history month, do something about it.

By the way how old are you; I'm fourteen and I know more about black history month than you do.

Well, many of our African ancestors didn't come, to what we now call the United States, willingly. They were packed up on a ship like a pack of animals (no, wait, even animals got better treatment), striped of their identity and their rights as human beings. They went on to endure countless years of scrutiny and ostracizing ( that we may still see today), while violence was being inflicted toward them at every corner. There have been many greatly unrecognized contributions that helped propel the American society by African Americans. This month is to help remember and give appreciation to people that for so long were looked upon as different. People who were essentially separated from everything they knew, to come to a land of the unknown. People who rose above, against all odds, and prevailed remarkably. To people who were once looked upon as "subhuman". It is to those who come before us and those that lay ahead that we celebrate. A culture that is so rich in beauty and history, that is often ignored. I'm proud of both my African and European ancestry, as well as Native American. Here's to those who are ridiculed and hated for the their appearance, their origins or nationalities, their religion or beliefs, or any other tedious supposed infraction . May we ALL come together in peace. Why don't you try opening your mind and learn about others different from yourself. You'll be amazed at what you'll take from the experience.

I believe this will answer your question, 1st half anyways.

I don't think there is white history month, because whites were not considered the minority. It looks to me that when the underdog does something good, we always celebrate it. I am glad we have a black history month. It is part of our heritage in the states There were many black people who contributed things to this country, many good things.

We have white entertainment television, it's just not named so.
