The expansion bay is for the hard drive, which is something that the slim PS2 can't have.
It's not really necessary to have the hard drive because only 1 game takes advantage of the hard drive, and that game is Final Fantasy XI. If you don't play FFXI on the PS2, then you don't need to get the original PS2.
The original PS2 also requires you to get the internet adapter if you want to play online. The slim PS2 has the internet adapter built in, so you can online right out of the box.
The slim PS2 is better because it has newer designed hardware, so they're less prone to errors.

They have the same graphics. The only difference is that the slim PS2 got smaller because of improved technology, which can shrink many of the PS2's hardware. The slot for the hard drive was removed, which freed up a lot of space. There's really no reason to get a PS2 unless you plan on playing FFXI. Of course, if you plan on playing FFXI, good luck finding a network adapter so that you can go online. Go with the slim PS2 because it has the network adapter built in, and I don't think you'll have any use for the hard drive.

I like the slim ones, I don't think that they lack any hardware, and some advantages are not having to flip a power switch every time you want to turn on your ps2 then having to press the power button, also, if the slim falls, it won't break as easily as the original.

The slim ps2 lets you play online w/out buying a $50 adapter for fat ps2. also the slim heats up faster.

I have both and well I find the slim one more favorable. I think that that fat one breaks easier, but the slim does overheat and lag. You don't need to buy an online cartridge though.

I have had no problems with it lagging or with slower game loading. The only problem that I found with the big one I had was that it overheated and became clogged with dust if you put in a place that becomes dusty really fast. Otherwise, I have seen no other differences, me also being a normal gamer, nobody special.

I would say that the bigger one is cheaper so you get to save a few bucks. however if you play with friends i don't think you would want to get a console that looks like a brick lol. They are both used for online play and I have never heard of it heating up.

Yes, the slim version runs hotter, but it also has more bang for the buck. You get the ethernet adapter, and you get the flip-top dvd drive that is not motorized, meaning it won't break on you.
Get the slim one.
