About 60% of your body heat is releases from your head. The holes are up there to let heat out of the hat that is most often made out of cotton which insulates and keeps most heat in, if the holes weren't there. If the holes weren't there, player would be suffering from heat stroke and passing out during games, especially in the heat of summer.

If you looked at the human head through night vision or a heat seeker, you would see that the head is one of the most hottest body parts. So to let out some steam, you have the holes.
