I am not gay, but I am a Catholic educator.
The Church considers being gay a disorder- by itself, it is NOT a sin to have same- sex attraction.
What IS SINFUL is any sexual act that takes place outside of a Sacramental marriage. That includes oral sex, straight sex, gay sex and, yes, masturbation.
So, you see the sin is not in being gay- it is in participating in sex outside of marriage.
COURAGE is the name of the gay/lesbian Catholic outreach.
Blessings!

I was raised Catholic, but didn't get confirmed because by then I knew I didn't want to be a catholic. The official stance (so far, though this pope seems to be taking things in a much more negative direction) is that a gay orientation is beyond one's "choice" and is NOT to be held against them. Gay people are discriminated against and that's wrong and good Catholic people should do what they can to stop that. BUT, gay people are supposed to remain celibate all their lives. I went to a Catholic highschool, all guys...I'll tell you I had my hesitation about coming out there, but after graduation I was pretty much a lot more comfortable with myself, and a lot more comfortable that I would never have to see any of those people again if I didn't want to. In college I was just out pretty much from the get-go, and I did eventually tell my parents (who are essentially "close-enough Catholics", and don't necessarily agree with all the doctrine, though they do agree with the dogma). MOST Catholic individuals might not necessarily know about the official stance (which can be found in the Catechism as well as a document from the American Bishops entitled "Always Our Children"). It really does come down to how that individual feels already.

I keep the thoughts and desires to myself. The Catholic church has the opinion that to be gay is not the sin, but to act upon those desires is the sin. It is not easy.

I found that Catholic and Gay were mutually exclusive. Since my homosexuality is NOT a choice, and my catholocism is, I let go of the religion

I am Catholic and gay myself, but have not come out. The church does not approve of our lifestyle, so I keep to myself.

I ditched Catholicism years ago! It seems that being Catholic and human doesn't go together, so I dropped the Catholicism.
