5 days before period and 5 days after period are considered safe days. actually people say a week but sperm can live in your body for 2 days and that's why 5 days. As you know 14 days (mid cycle) are the days of ovulation. count from 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th (a week) for extra safety. Not all methods are 100% safe. Not likely that you got pregnant with your 2 yrs old 1 day after or before your period. Only the days of ovulation. But in rare cases, you never know. Scientifically, it's not likely 99%

Not every female has a 28 day cycle, that is such a myth that we grow up learning in school and then so many women have trouble getting pregnant because they can't figure out their ovulation time.
I got pregnant with DD1 very easy but trying to conceive our second was tough. I ended up joining a group and buying the book called,
TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR FERTILITY; by TONI WEISHLER
take a look at her website:
www.tcoyf.com
and you will see boards with a lot of women with extremely different cycle lengths.
You are basically fertile the minute you get scretchy egg white type cervical fluid, the stretchier it is, the most fertile you are.
Having sex the day before you ovulate and the day of ovulation are generally the best days, even the day after.
The day before your period is due to start is not a very fertile time at all.
The egg white stretchy cervical fluid is the perfect type for sperm to live in and will keep it alive longer. That's when you really want to have sex.
Please don't think that I'm trying to be rude, because I certainly am not but I thought that I might add this extra info. YOu can actually get a free month when you join the website and it will give you a table to write info etc and if you want to temp you can and it will predict your ovulation dates for you.
We had been trying for number 2 for six months and then I tried this website and bought the book, our second cycle was our succesful one.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU, hope you are pregnant and dont' have to do this

If you have a regular 28 day cycle, then sex the day before your period is due would not be during your fertile time. Of course, you could always be off one month and ovulate at a different time, so protection should be used if you don't want a baby. Your fertile time would be day 9 (5 days beofre ovulation since sperm can live that long), until day 15 (since you would ovulate on day 14 and the egg is only good for about 24 hours).

Getting pregnant depends on when you have sex in relation to when you ovulate. Its true that 14 days is the common number, but it can be different for every woman, and every cycle. You can virtually get pregnant at any time. If you have sex the day before your period, then happen to ovulate 5 days later, you could get pregnant. There are really no accurate ways of timing sex to avoid getting pregnant.

You probably aren't fertile the day before your period, but i have heard of people getting pregnant any time of the month, everyone, and every pregnancy is different...

you are only fertile for a few days each cycle, while it is possible to ovulate close to your period, it's not likely. Check out the link below.
