Yes.Thinking goes on, when awake or sleeping, as directed or random thoughts. That is the function of the mind; that is its job. You can "get in the gap" between thoughts only by conscious effort as when meditating.
Usually, you find a formula that works for you such as reciting a prayer and backing up to focus on the space between the words or by making a sound like Ah or Ohm or losing yourself in a beautiful sight or sound. The simplest of all is to concentrate on your breathing. When a thought interferes, you use the technique until you are quiet, once again.

Try chanting the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra (the great mantra for deliverance from all suffering and illusion) This mantra will help one control the mind very easily. go to harekrishnatemple.c Read Bhagavad Gita as it is By Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada- tells in detail how to control the mind and the purpose of life. Works better than anything else I've tried and I have tried many many things.

Yes, the mind is constantly active, either awake or asleep, but sometimes we don't remember the activity of the mind when we are asleep. Those who train the mind to focus are successful in obtaining "peace of mind". Since it is not possible to quiet the mind, it must be focused instead. Meditation and yoga techniques have been long used to focus the mind in one particular direction, unifying the mind, body, and soul.
My teacher, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Srila Prabhupada, instructed his students to chant Hare Krsna Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare. This transcendental chanting creates sound vibration, purifying the mind, the body, and the soul. This ultimately leads to peace and happiness.

Yes, my mind is in a constant state of thinking. It really seems to never stop. When I am awake , when I am sleeping , in my dreams I think.
For some people keeping "occupied " with other things work but , for me it doesn't. I crochet, scrapbook, knit, play computer games and none of my hobbies help stop the thinking.
I wonder sometimes, if it would stop thinking , if it will be the day I die. So, I completely understand .

I think so. Even in sleep, we dream. The brain is just doing what it's there for. But some things are pleasant to think about and don't make us aware of the busyness of our thoughts. It's the unpleasant things that make us want to find the off switch on our heads.

Mine is the same way, but I am greatful for it. I am able to really think alot about things. I know that there are a lot of people out there who can "turn off" their brain, but I have not been able to do that. I don't think I would want to. I enjoy being able to always think a lot. You should try to accept it and use it to your advantage.. good luck...

Only when I watch TV (which is rare) does my mind take a break. I like it that my mind stays busy, it keeps me young.

Yes. Try switching to think about things that calm you or think about your interests.
We notice this more when the thoughts are more stress related.

Definitely. It can be annoying. lol. But if we keep ourselves occupied with something we like to do, it would'nt be running so much...we'll be focusing elsewhere instead.....
